Tom Yung Goong Spicy Shrimp Soup
Saw this in my local B&M and had to give it a try.
I knew the final product would be a long way off the “serving suggestion” pictured on the lid (they’ve dedicated a whopping 5% of the picture to showing what’s actually in this pot, then slapped a couple of artistically engorged tiger king prawns and a wedge of lime over the top).
Still, I was inspired, and in a Student Munch first, I went and followed the serving suggestion (sort of) rather than settle for what otherwise looked uninteresting. I had a packet of fish sticks in the fridge that needed eating, so let’s get a little bit chefy.
First impressions: way too much packaging – three sachets of sauce and powder which you have to empty onto the bed of noodles, not to mention the box itself coming wrapped in plastic too. But it does come with a plastic fork, which is handy.
I added hot water and something floated to the top… I was amazed to find that it was a real, actual shrimp! Yes, only one – and I don’t particularly trust dried shellfish – but at least something in this box was real once!
End result: tasty. Highly recommend adding chopped fish sticks (pictured), which complement the spiciness and the fat, chewy noodles really well. Would have again.
